Incense care

Burning incense creates fragrance through smoke and heat, so it deserves respect and common sense. Follow these safety guidelines to enjoy your incense without accidents or surprises.

Light the tip of the incense stick with a match or lighter and allow it to burn for about 10 to 15 seconds. Gently blow out the flame so that only a glowing ember and a steady trail of smoke remain. The stick will continue to smolder on its own.

Always use a heat-resistant, non-flammable holder that is stable on a flat surface. This catches ash and keeps hot embers from contacting anything that shouldn’t be burned.

Burn incense in a well-ventilated room and make sure the smoke has a clear path to disperse. Keep incense sticks clear of drafts, curtains, paper, clothing, and other flammable materials.

Never leave burning incense unattended and never move the holder while the stick is still hot. Always extinguish completely before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Smoke from burning incense contains particulate matter and compounds that can irritate lungs, eyes, and sinuses, especially in people with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Opening a window or using ventilation while burning can reduce exposure.

If you or anyone in your space has respiratory sensitivities, consider limiting how often you burn incense or choosing well-ventilated areas. Children, elderly adults, and pets may be more sensitive to smoke exposure, so extra caution is wise.

Incense is an open ember and a fire risk if not treated properly. Keep incense at least a foot away from anything that could catch fire. Do not burn incense near curtains, fabric, plants, or clutter. Always place holders on sturdy surfaces where they can’t be knocked over.

Never leave hot embers or ash where they might touch flammable objects, and do not discard ash until it is fully cool.

Store your incense sticks in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moisture, heat, or humidity can weaken fragrance and cause uneven burning.

Keep unused incense out of reach of children and pets, and never allow them to play with incense sticks, matches, or lighters.
